Salve!
Mayor Lightfoot has initiated a shutdown advisory for the holidays. We just want to update you with our status during these times as well as upcoming events locally as well as the group worldwide.
Shutdown Advisory
Chicago Academy
We will remain open for the duration of the shutdown unless further mandates come down. This advisory does not pertain to gyms and our attendance is already limited to below 10. So, we may continue classes as scheduled.
Thanksgiving Weekend
No Classes - November 25-29
Classes Resume - November 30
Ridgeville Evanston Program
Ridgeville has not been mandated to close and the shutdown does not pertain to the park district and classes are 10 or less students.
I know some have shown reservations to attend due to the rise in cases. If you are uncomfortable attending the last few weeks of this session, you may contact ContraMestre Bambu (axechicago@gmail.com) and Ridgeville will give to a credit/discount on the Winter Capoeira Session for your remaining sessions.
Thanksgiving Weekend
No Class - November 22 (edited)
Updates and Events
Capoeira Portuguese for English Speakers
We’ve had a lot of interest in a Portuguese course revolving around the Capoeira class setting. The course will revolve around basic speaking, pronunciation, and sentence structure using vocabulary and common phrases used in a capoeira class. We plan to limit the number of students but are open to multiple days/times if the demand is high enough. Please fill out the one question survey to see what are the best days and times to host this course. We’d like to start in December!
This course will give a base of understanding and speaking to build on and become more fluent as you grow in capoeira. Portuguese is vital for growth in capoeira. Much of capoeira’s history and philosophy is an oral tradition passed down thru generations. Without the language, much will be lost in translation.
ONLINE Beginners Capoeira Course
With the pandemic, it’s been hard to properly get new students started. Lately, we’ve had an uptick in interest in capoeira classes. We wanted to offer an Online Capoeira Course for Beginners. Keep an eye out, COMING JANUARY 2021!

Did you Know?
Most know that there are 3 sizes of berimbau (Gunga, Medio, and Viola). But did you know that this also applies to atabaques? The three sizes are, from largest to smallest, the Rum(hoom), Rum-pi (hoom-pee), and Le (lei).
The trio is used in Candomble and play individual parts to create the proper rhythm. This was a major influence in the introduction of using the structured bateria with a trio of berimbaus, which is so commonly used today. This was not always the case as rodas would happen in the streets with or without berimbaus with no real arrangement of the instruments.
We hope you’re finding the newsletter useful. Help us by sharing and commenting about things you’d like to see in future editions.
