A very disturbing report has come to light in the capoeira world and I wanted to address it, as well as open the door for any concerns or questions you may have. The report has come out of Brazil about an ongoing investigation into one of the largest capoeira schools in the world. It involves many high-profile names, including the founder, of that group committing sex crimes and child abuse dating back multiple decades. The investigation is ongoing and all the names have yet to be released/discovered.
The reports are extremely disturbing and their actions go against every principle and ideal that Grupo Axé Capoeira stands for. First, I want to put your minds at ease. Our group has no ties or common lineage with this group or the people in it. While I have met some of the names on this list, none of them have ever been to any of our Chicago events.
Capoeira is a beautiful art form that has tremendous power to do so much good in the world. It disgusts and infuriates me that these individuals would abuse that power and their position to hurt innocent children.
I want you all to know that the safety of your children is paramount to me. I am eternally grateful for the trust you put in me to take care of their well-being. I do my best to be a positive light and influence in their lives. I only bring guests that I know will do the same and moving forward I will be even more selective on the guests I bring to work with them.
I wanted you to hear the news from me as opposed to finding it on the internet. Thank you again for your trust and belief in me. I'm open to any and all questions.
Salve, Contramestre Bambu
